An early noon tip in Iowa City after a snowstorm brought less than normal sized crowd to Carver-Hawkeye Arena, but the energy was high from start to finish. The Iowa Women’s Basketball team won a battle, defeating a talented Fairfield squad 86-72 to extend their undefeated start to 8-0. Tied with last season, it’s the longest undefeated streak to start a season since the 2004-05 season.

It was fun first half of basketball, with Fairfield knocking down six first quarter three-pointers, building their lead as large as 22-11 at one point. The Hawkeyes got back in it with a 13-2 to run to tie the game, while the intensity inside the arena ratcheted up after Taylor Stremlow was hit with a technical foul. An 11-6 push to close the half gave Iowa a 41-35 halftime advantage. Scoring came at a premium in the third quarter, with just 25 total points, but the Hawkeyes were able to build a 56-45 lead. The Stags didn’t go quietly, knocking down nine threes in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough to make the comeback.

Iowa scored 86 points on 70 possessions (1.229 points per possession), while shooting 29-of-57 (50.9%) from the floor, 10-of-21 (47.6%) from three-point range and 18-of-26 (69.2%) from the free throw line. Ava Heiden recorded another double, finishing with 18 points and 16 rebounds, while Kylie Feuerbach tied a career-high with 17 points and four made threes. Hannah Stuelke added 13 points and eight rebounds. Taylor McCabe made four threes and finished with 13 points.

Fairfield scored 72 points on 75 possessions (0.960 points per possession), while shooting 26-of-65 (40.0%) from the floor, 18-of-39 (46.2%) from three-point range and 2-of-5 (40.0%) from the free throw line. The Stags big two, Kaety L’Amoreaux and Meghan Andersen combined for 25 points, while Christina Pham added 14 points.

The Hawkeyes outrebounded the Stags 44-26, pulling down 32-of-40 (80.0%) defensive rebounds and 12-of-30 (40.0%) offensive rebounds. The turnover battle went in favor of the nobody, with both sides committing 16 turnovers. Iowa outscored Fairfield 32-18 in points off turnovers/second chance points.
