Campus Newcomer: Elkhorn LHP Brolan Frost

We continue our Iowa Baseball Campus Newcomer series with an incoming freshman pitcher that comes to Iowa as an underrated prospect in the Midwest. Elkhorn left-handed pitcher Brolan Frost was a multiple year all-conference performer for the Elks and now will turn his focus to his upcoming freshman year at Iowa. He is rated as the #3 left-handed pitcher in Wisconsin and the #175 left-handed pitcher in the country by Perfect Game.
This past season, as a senior for the Elks, Frost made nine starts, posting a 2.21 ERA over 44.1 innings, including 64 strikeouts to 24 walks. Opponents batted just .177 against him and averaged only 0.65 hits per inning. Frost earned Second Team All-Southern Lakes honors, making him a two-time all-conference selection.

We caught up with the 6-foot-5, 180-pound left-handed pitcher from the Badger State to preview his upcoming freshman year with the Hawkeyes.
Q: When do you move to Iowa City and what is your excitement level like for that move in day?
FROST: I have already moved to Iowa City, and I was really excited about that. I love the environment here and I was eager to start training here.
Q: What number do you plan to wear and why?
FROST: I selected number 17. I always aim to have a number with 7 in it just because of my birthday, which is July 7th, or 07/07.
Q: You were named an All-Conference selection this past season as a senior. What does it mean to you to receive that honor to wrap up your high school career?
FROST: With earning that all-conference award, I just took it as a sign that my work was paying off and a motivator to continue working toward bigger and better things.
Q: What pitches do you have in your arsenal (speeds)? What do you consider your best pitch and why?
FROST: I am a 3 pitch guy with a fastball, curveball, and change. My fastball has currently been sitting upper 80’s, and I plan on being sitting 90 by the spring season. My best pitch is my curveball. Being left-handed my off speed tends to throw batters off more than a fastball would, and with my fastball velo not being something astonishing, the off speed is my go-to.
Q: Looking back at your recruitment, what stood out about the Iowa Baseball program that made them an easy choice over other schools?
FROST: When touring Iowa, the coaches kept mentioning their slogan BVY, which stands for best version of yourself, and to me that was really cool, and it meant they cared about me as a player and person.
Q: Were there any other schools that you heavily considered during your recruitment?
FROST: Honestly, I looked at other schools, but none stood out to me like Iowa did. Like I mentioned previously, Iowa really cared about me and reached out more than once or twice.

Q: What is your relationship like with the coaching staff? Who do you talk with the most?
FROST: I would say I am still getting used to communicating with the coaching staff, but I know that I can reach out to them whenever. I would say I talk to Coach Sutherland and Coach Kenny the most, just because they were huge impacts on my recruitment and development.
Q: After you committed there was a change at pitching coach. What about your conversations with Coach Sean Kenny kept you locked into your commitment to Iowa?
FROST: The change in pitching coach didn’t bother me at all. I understand that things are going to change throughout my career, and when I met Coach Kenny, I was super excited for the knowledge and dedication he was bringing to the team.
Q: What have you been doing since the end of your high school season to prepare for you arrival on campus this fall?
FROST: Since the end of my high school season, I have been here in Iowa City lifting and on a throwing program to prepare me for the season.
Q: If someone asked you “what do you bring to the Iowa Baseball team?” How would you describe your game?
FROST: I believe what I bring to Iowa is projectability, with my 6’5 frame I have lots of growth to make, and I think it will be shown on the field here at Iowa.
Q: What is your relationship like with the other incoming freshman? Current players?
FROST: I haven’t gotten to really know many of the incoming freshman, but I do look forward to doing so.
Q: What are your goals for your freshman season at Iowa? What areas of your game do you want to improve?
FROST: For my freshman year at Iowa I want to see a jump in explosiveness and velo. I think those go hand and hand with each other, and I believe Iowa has what I need to do that.
