Campus Newcomer: Wrightstown OF Trevor Vande Hey

We continue our Iowa Baseball Campus Newcomer series with an incoming freshman outfielder from Wisconsin that made some history for his high school program as a senior. Wrightstown outfielder Trevor Vande Hey became the first player in Tigers program history to earn First Team All-State honors and now will turn his focus to his upcoming freshman year at Iowa. He is rated as the #2 outfielder in the state of Wisconsin and the #105 outfielder in the country by Perfect Game.
This past season, as a senior for the Tigers, Vande Hey batted .390, earning unanimous First Team All-Conference and First Team All-State honors. Trevor was also named Northeast District Division II Co-Player of the Year. He also played in the 41st Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Classic.
In preparation for his arrival in Iowa City, Vande Hey has been competing with the Green Bay Blue Ribbons in the Wisconsin State Baseball League. In 30 games, he is batting .290, with 29 hits, four extra base hits and 10 RBIβs.
We caught up with the 6-foot-0, 200-pound outfielder from the Badger State to preview his freshman year with the Hawkeyes.
Q: When do you move to Iowa City and what is your excitement level like for that move in day?
VANDE HEY: I will be moving down to Iowa City on August 17th. I am super excited to get started in Iowa and just to try all the new things with college.
Q: What number do you plan to wear and why?
VANDE HEY: I am planning on wearing #28. There is no real reason why Iβm wearing it I kind of just thought it was a good number that was left.
Q: You were a unanimous First Team All-State selection. What did it mean to you to earn that honor as a senior and earn it with the unanimous distinction?
VANDE HEY: It meant the world. No one has done that at my high school. It just meant everything after my coach told me I was the first one in Wrightstown history to do it.
Q: You were one of the first players to commit to Iowa in the β25 class, not long after Milo Kelley. Where do you feel like you have grown the most with your game since you committed?
VANDE HEY: I feel like I have grown the most on my mental side. I felt like I use to be a guy who use to let the game control my emotions, but for the last couple of years Iβve felt like my emotions have been getting way better.
Q: Looking back at your recruitment, what stood out about the Iowa Baseball program that made them an easy choice over other schools?
VANDE HEY: I just knew that they have always been a really good program in the Big Ten and they have always been in the running for the conference championship. They always just made me feel like it was another home in Iowa like they were just another family waiting for me to get down there.

Q: Were there any other schools that you heavily considered during your recruitment?
VANDE HEY: There were a few other schools I was looking at. It was a hard decision but after I thought about how everyone treated me at Iowa it was a no brainer.
Q: What is your relationship like with the coaching staff? Who do you talk with the most?
VANDE HEY: I think my relationship with the coaching staff is really good. I talk to Marty Sutherland the most out of all the coaches, but Iβve had some really good conversations with all of them.
Q: Youβve gotten a chance to play with Green Bay in the Wisconsin State League. What has that experience been like and what have you learned over your time with that team?
VANDE HEY: The experience has been great. Iβve got to play in a lot of games, and Iβve got to play against some really high caliber pitchers and players. I feel like itβs showing me what I will be playing against once I get to Iowa.
Q: If someone asked you βwhat do you bring to the Iowa Baseball team?β How would you describe your game?
VANDE HEY: I would say my game is gritty. I like to keep it low profile, but I also like to keep the game fun but at the same time when itβs time to lock in thatβs when messing around stops and game time begins.
Q: What is your relationship like with the other incoming freshman? Current players?
VANDE HEY: My relationship I would say is really good. I know a lot of them pretty well and my roommate is Brolan Frost. Iβve known him for a while now because we are both from Wisconsin.
Q: What are your goals for your freshman season at Iowa? What areas of your game do you want to improve?
VANDE HEY: I just want to develop my skills more and really get to understand the game at a deeper level. I want to learn how to play at a better level and to be more consistent with my whole game.
