The Iowa basketball season hasn’t ended, but the Hawkeyes are already seeing their roster begin to change. On Wednesday, Dasonte Bowen announced that he would be entering the transfer portal. The sophomore guard averaged 3.7 points and dished out 75 assists in 51 career games, including 9 starts.

According to Fran McCaffery, Bowen had been sidelined for the past month with a knee issue that would need to be addressed. He last played on February 14th, playing four minutes in a loss to Maryland.

Bowen was a three star recruit coming out of high school. He averaged 3.1 points per game in his freshman year, while starting 8 games. He had a season high 12 points in a December game against Duke at Madison Square Garden.

This season, Bowen started one game. Early on he was playing between 15-20 minutes per game. He reached double figures in scoring four times, including a career best 17 points in a win over Arkansas State. However, after playing 17 minutes in a win over Rutgers on January 6th, Bowen only reached double figures in minutes in one more game.

With Bowen departing, Iowa’s guard court will be much smaller if Tony Perkins also moves on after the season. Perkins has the opportunity to return for his Covid year, but he indicated that he would make that decision after the season.

Iowa now has 10 of their 13 scholarships spoken for heading into next year, but as we mentioned Perkins, along with perhaps Patrick McCaffery, do have the option to return for another season.
