While the Iowa Soccer team has reached new heights over the past few seasons, one team has stuck as a mainstay thorn in the side of the Hawkeyes. That’s Wisconsin. The Badgers broke a tie in the 75th minute en route to a 2-1 win for their fourth win in the last five seasons against the Hawkeyes. With the loss, Iowa falls to 7-2-2 on the season.

The Hawkeyes had not allowed a first half goal since their loss to TCU back on August 21st, but the Badgers were able to break through in just the 4th minute. Off of a corner kick, Iowa goalkeeper Fernanda Mayrink punched it out of the box, but Maddie Ishaug pushed it back into a dangerous area. Deflecting off of a Hawkeye defender, Brooke Allen was open in front of goal and finished to put Wisconsin in front 1-0.

The majority of the first half was controlled by Wisconsin. Opportunities for the Hawkeyes were few and far between. They put a couple of shots on goal, but were unable to give Badgers goalkeeper Drew Stover a true test. It was not an opening 45 minutes to look back on glowingly, but Iowa had managed to find an important second half goal (or two) in each of their last three matches.

In the 50th minute, the “important second half goal” was back again, with Iba Oching putting the equalizer in the back of the net for her second goal in as many games. A chaotic situation at the top of the box, Kenzie Roling got a touch on the ball is it pinballed around. Her touch was just enough and it found Oching who made one move and sent a shot past GK Drew Stover to tie the game 1-1 with 40 minutes to play.

Over the last three matches, the Hawkeyes found a way to get a result. A late goal to salvage a draw with Northwestern, a final second winner against Purdue and a pair of late goals to beat Minnesota. This time, their magic ran out it was the Badgers who found the crunch time goal.

It seemed like it was a harmless attempt at a cross along the end line by Elle Ottey, but Miah Schueller’s clearance attempt went right to the feet of Erin Connolly in the middle of the box. A golden opportunity and the sophomore from Clayton, Missouri did not miss, slotting one past Mayrink for a goal that would hold up.
