Iowa Baseball lands Illinois State transfer RHP Joe Husak

The transfer portal, for the most part, has been a very good source for the Iowa Baseball program over the past few years. Rick Heller and his staff have been able to find the right pieces to fill positions of need, and this offseason is no different, although, the new 34-player roster cap will limit how many additions they can make.

On Thursday afternoon, the Hawkeyes earned their first portal commitment, landing Illinois State right-hander Joe Husak. “Coming Home” was the simple message Husak’s Twitter post, as the Cambridge, Iowa native will return to his home state.

Rated as the #5 RHP in Iowa in the class of ’21 by Perfect Game, Husak started his collegiate career at South Dakota State, but transferred to Des Moines Area Community College after one season with the Jackrabbits. He spent one year at DMACC and then transferred to Illinois State where he spent each of the last two seasons.

As a junior for the Redbirds, Husak was one of ISU’s top bullpen arms, appearing in 24 games, posting a 3.96 ERA over 50.0 innings. He tallied 35 strikeouts to 15 walks and notched seven saves, earning All-MVC Honorable Mention honors.

This past season, as a senior at ISU, Husak appeared in 20 games, posting a 5.46 ERA over 28.0 innings, including 22 strikeouts to 21 walks. He tossed 2.0 scoreless innings, including three strikeouts in the Redbirds 6-5 upset win over the Hawkeyes in Iowa City.

Over two seasons with the Illinois State program, Husak appeared in 44 games, posting a 4.50 ERA over 78.0 innings, including 57 strikeouts to 36 walks and 86 hits allowed.
