For most of his college coaching career, Ben McCollum was able to pull strong players out of the state of Missouri and help him win national title at the Division 2 level. They also helped him win a Missouri Valley crown in his one and only year leading the Drake program.

Now McCollum is back in his home state of Iowa and he could be close to offering a very talented and under the radar prospects in the Midwest in Ethan Brown. The 6-foot-4 guard from Rolla, MO was in Iowa City early this week for an official visit and came away impressed.

“It was my first time seeing Iowa City and it was awesome. The campus was nice, as were the facilities. It’s a great college town and everything there is about Iowa,” Brown said.

Iowa’s interest wasn’t new. When McCollum was at Drake, they had extended a scholarship offer to play for the Bulldogs. Hawkeye assistant coach Connor Wheeler has been keeping in touch with him and his family for over a year.

“Coach Connor Wheeler has been recruiting me for about a year now. We have a great relationship and talk all the time. With Coach McCollum, he is a great guy and coach. He knows what it takes to win.”

This past season, Brown averaged 22.2 points, 6.7 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and 3.8 steals for his high school team in Rolla. By stuffing the stat sheet, he is firmly on Iowa’s radar and Coach McCollum told Brown that they will be watching him closely this weekend to see if they will extend a scholarship offer.

“Iowa hasn’t offered me a scholarship yet,” Brown said. “Coach McCollum said that they are going to come watch me this weekend in Kansas City and continue to get a feel for me as a player and see how I am developing.”

In addition to the interest from Iowa, Brown holds offers from Northern Iowa and Southern Illinois. He made an official visit to UNI last week and plans to see SIU in the coming weeks. He is also being recruited by Missouri State.
