The 9th-ranked Iowa Field Hockey team saw their season come to close on Friday afternoon in the Chapel Hill Regional of the NCAA Tournament. They fell to 8th-ranked Duke by a final score of 2-1, with the Blue Devils scoring two second half goals to grab the win. Iowa closes the season with a 14-6 overall record.

Iowa got on the board first, scoring in the 25th minute. A poor trap on a length cross field pass led to a Dionne van Aalsum steal. She took advantage of the misplay by the Duke back line and finished in the circle for her 28th goal of the season, giving Iowa a 1-0 lead that they would take into halftime.

The Blue Devils found an equalizer in the 41st minute off of a penalty corner. Maggie Kondrath inserted to Juliette Schulten who attempted a direct shot that was blocked, but she regained possession and put it in the back of the net to tie the game 1-1 late in the third quarter.

In the final quarter, Rachel Herbine was shown a yellow card, putting her on the bench for five minutes and Duke scored the game-winner on with the player-up advantage. A pass into the circle from Madison Beach deflected to Alaina McVeigh who sent a sharp backhand shot off the far post and in to give the Blue Devils the lead with just over ten minutes left to play.

Another yellow card on Iowa, this time shown to Lauren DeRose, put the Hawkeyes down a player for ten minutes straight. Despite the disadvantage, they were still able to put pressure on Duke and threatened to send the game to overtime. The Hawkeyes earned a penalty corner in the 56th minute and the 59th minute, but both chances came up short, including Dionne van Aalsum sending a shot just wide with 70 seconds to play.

Two seniors, Milly Short and Mia Magnotta, have played their final game in the black and gold. Short started 59 games in her Hawkeye career and scored a career-high five goals this season. Magnotta started 61 games in her time at Iowa and finishes her career with 264 saves.
