Hawkeyes start fast, defeat Redhawks

The Iowa Hawkeyes used a suffocating defense early in the game and aggressive attacking offense to fuel an early twenty point lead in the first half on their way to a 99-70 victory over Southeast Missouri State on Tuesday night.
The win moves Iowa to 4-0 in the first season under the direction of head coach Ben McCollum. Next up for the Hawkeyes will be Chicago State, who comes to Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Thursday night with the tip set for 6 p.m.
The Hawkeyes opened strong, scoring the first five points of the game, three coming from guard Isaia Howard. Cooper Koch added to the Iowa lead when he drilled a three pointer just before the first media timeout to put the Hawkeyes up 11-5. Tavion Banks hook shot in the paint pushed the lead to double figures at 15-5. Eventually a three from Bennett Stirtz put Iowa up 22-7. Stirtz finished his night with 15 points and 9 assists.
Cam Manyawu had a layup and then an old fashioned three point play to increase the lead to 29-9 and the Hawkeyes were in full control. Iowa did struggle from the foul line in the first half, missing 9 from the charity stripe, but they were steady from the floor. Brendan Hausen knocked home a deep three pointer to push the lead back to twenty, 40-20. Alvaro Folguieras hit a pair from the line and then Trevin Jirak finished off an old fashioned three point play and it was 45-21 and the Hawkeyes were in full control. Folguieras wrapped up the first half with a three on an assist by Stirtz and Iowa went to break up 49-25.
