It wasn’t always pretty, particularly in the first half, but the Iowa Hawkeyes methodically picked apart Chicago State on Thursday evening and pulled away for a comfortable 93-54 victory at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

With the victory, the Hawkeyes move to 5-0 on the season. Next up for Iowa is their toughest test of the young season. They travel to Palm Springs and will face Ole Miss in the Acrisure Classic on Tuesday evening with tip time set for 8:30 p.m.

Iowa started off fast to open the game. They scored the first five points of the half with Cam Manyawu accounting for a pair of them, but Chicago State quickly cut the lead to one before Kael Combs, who started for the first time as a Hawkeye, nailed a three pointer to make it 10-6 Iowa.

The Hawkeyes were cold from three point range in the first half, connecting on just 3-16 from beyond the arch. Tate Sage provided a scoring spark off the bench. He scored seven straight points from a Hawkeye perspective and Iowa opened up a 19-15 lead.

That was part of a 14-2 run for the Hawkeyes with Tavion Banks finishing it off with a layup to make it 27-15. Banks hit a pair from the charity strip to push the edge to 31-18 before Chicago State scored six in a row to cut the lead back down to single digits.

Then Bennett Stirtz got into the scoring column. The All American guard had not scored for most of the first half, but he scored six late points, including a drive, foul, and free throw as Iowa got to the halftime break up 40-24 over the Cougars.

The start of the second half was a clinic in cutting and ball movement for the Hawkeyes. Iowa opened the second half on a 14-4 run that was capped by a dunk from Isaia Howard to make the score 56-30.

Howard continued his scoring spree with a pair of buckets to push the lead to 60-34. Sage also hit a layup and Banks rolled in a triple and it was 67-36 with Iowa in full control of the game. The lead continued to grow with Cooper Koch rattled home a three from the corner and it was 75-43.

The capper for Iowa was a deep three from Brendan Hausen to make it 87-48. The Hawkeyes were led in scoring by Banks with 16. Folgueiras finished with 14 points and Cooper Koch has 10. Iowa shot 70% in the second half and finished the contest shooting 57% for the game.
