Iowa Soccer shuts out rival Nebraska in Lincoln

Nothing gets the competitive juices flowing like a border rivalry. On Sunday afternoon, the 10th-ranked Iowa Soccer team battled Nebraska in a physical match. The Hawkeyes held off plenty of late pressure from the Huskers, keeping their lead intact to pull out a 1-0 shutout win in Lincoln. Iowa has now won six of their last eight meetings with Nebraska.
All it took was a single goal for the Hawkeyes and that goal came early in the match. Dave Dilanni’s squad put the pressure on from the get-go, earning four corner kicks in the first 18 minutes of the match. The Nebraska defense could only hang on for so long. In the 18th minute, of Iowa’s fourth corner of the half, Iba Oching opted to play the ball short to Price Loposer, giving her a service opportunity from a dangerous angle. The ball into the box from Loposer found the head of Millie Greer and she put it in the top left corner for the opening goal.
From there, it was all about surviving and keeping Nebraska off the board. Opportunities for Iowa in the attacking half were few and far between, with the Huskers putting together their fair share of chances, but no equalizer was found. It wasn’t without a few nervy moments.
The two biggest moments, one in each half, came away in favor of Iowa. In the 37th minute, Nebraska had a chance to even the match, but the goal scorer, Millie Greer, made a big defensive play. Forward Reagan Raabe got an open look on the left side of the box, but her shot attempt didn’t even test Iowa goalkeeper Taylor Kane, as it deflected off the head of Greer and out of play for a corner kick. Had it gone on goal, it would have tested Kane for save.
In the 54th minute, Nebraska had an even better chance, their best chance of the match to equalize. This time, it was Reagan Raabe with a service ball across the box towards the front of the net where Ava Makovicka stood open. A golden opportunity, Makovicka wasn’t able to put it on goal, with her shot attempt going high and wide of frame.

The Huskers tried time and time again down the stretch to put long service balls into the box, but were unable to find a goal. With the win, the Hawkeyes move to 8-2-2 on the season and currently sit in second place in the Big Ten standings with ten points. Iowa has now secured a clean sheet in seven of their last ten matches.
