FloSports' three-part docuseries on the historic, drama-filled inaugural season for the Iowa women's wrestling program streams worldwide beginning October 15.

Get ready for a look inside the Iowa women’s wrestling program like you’ve never seen before.

Yesterday, FloSports announced the upcoming debut for its long-in-the-works documentary project following the Hawkeyes.

From Flo’s press release:

“HAWKEYES – The First Season with Iowa Women’s Wrestling” gives viewers an unprecedented look inside at the historic first season for the program. It tells the story of the Hawkeyes’ season-long battle against North Central College and the down-to-the-wire finish at the 2024 National Duals and the National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships

It also features backstories from several of the athletes, including Kylie Welker, Bella Mir, Lily Luft, Felicity Taylor and others. Viewers will discover how wrestling intertwines with the universal themes of love, loss, and family.

The three-part series will stream exclusively on FloWrestling beginning with Episode One on October 15. Episodes Two and Three will subsequently be released on October 22 and October 29 respectively – with the series also airing in its entirety on the Big Ten Network at a later date.

There will also be a pair of early viewing opportunities prior to the worldwide release.

The first will take place this Saturday at the third-annual Iowa Women’s Wrestling Academy.

Before the series debut, FloWrestling will host a special screening on October 4 at the Iowa Women’s Wrestling Academy, a special women’s-only event that teaches everything from scoring and strategy to nutrition and video review. Attendees participate in the same daily drills as the Iowa women’s team and learn everything it takes to be a women’s wrestler at Iowa. Attended by moms, grandmas, aunts, friends, cousins, co-workers, and all women aged 18 and older, the academy teaches attendees about wrestling and the future of the Iowa Women’s Wrestling Club.

Then on October 11, Flo will stream Episode One in between sessions of its “Who’s Number One” broadcast.

“Who’s Number One” is an annual high school exhibition event featuring the top boys and girls prospects in America – and will be held just down the road this year at Xtream Arena in Coralville.

Flo subscribers will be able to watch Episode One during the livestream of the event – four days before its worldwide release on October 15.

Two Thumbs Up

I’ve had the good fortune of viewing the series’ first episode already, and it left me eagerly anticipating the second and third to come.

Even as someone who covered much of the program’s inaugural season – including improbable, drama-filled wins over (then) burgeoning rival North Central College at both National Duals and the National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships – the behind-the-scenes access Flo was granted still proved to be incredibly insightful/captivating.

For more casual observers of the program – or perhaps newcomers to Iowa women’s wrestling altogether – I think it could hit in an even bigger way.

As we speak, I’m also working to set up an interview with the series’ director for a future episode of the Hawkeye Report Podcast. So, stay tuned for that.

Having only seen the first episode, I can’t speak to the quality of the entire project just yet. But based on what I have seen, as well as Flo’s track record with its documentary content, I’d highly encourage folks to check it out whenever they get the chance.

I do know Iowa’s inaugural 2023-24 season was filled with plenty of adversity in addition to its incredible triumphs. And the group of athletes/coaches who experienced it all have no shortage of stories (and personalities) perfect for a medium like this series.
