Kirk Ferentz picks up record setting 206th win as Big Ten head coach
Kirk Ferentz sits at the top of wins by a Big Ten head football coach.
On Saturday the longtime head coach of the Hawkeyes saw his team defeat UMass 47-7 to pick up his 206th victory as a Big Ten head coach. That passes legendary Ohio State head coach Woody Hayes, who had 205 wins with the Buckeyes.
Ferentz is the longest tenured coach in college football in his 27th season leading the Iowa program. His first victory as the head coach of the Hawkeyes was back in his first season, 1999, when Iowa beat Northern Illinois on September 19th. His first Big Ten conference win came over a year later when Iowa beat Michigan State in Iowa City, 21-16.

His 100th victory took place in the month of October when Iowa again beat Michigan State, 19-16 in overtime. The 150th was a blowout victory in 2018, 63-0 at Illinois and his 200th was last season when the Hawkeyes hosted the Washington Huskies, beating them 4016. That moved him pass Amos Alonzo Stagg for second place on the Big Ten win list.
Overall, Ferentz now has an overall record of 218-146 as a head coach, including his three yards leading the program at Maine. At Iowa, he is now 206-125 as the Hawkeyes head coach.
