The quarterback position at Iowa has been cursed with bad injury luck the last few years. That streak may or may not continue into 2025 with graduate transfer Mark Gronowski. On Saturday against Indiana on a run early in the fourth quarter, he injured his left knee and did not return to the game that Iowa eventually lost to the Hoosiers, 20-13.

On Tuesday, Iowa offensive coordinator Tim Lester offered his own update on the status of his starting quarterback.

“All injured players are working hard to get back. Don’t know Mark’s status yet. It’s cloudy. We don’t need to know, though, because it’s a bye week. Next week, you’ll have the head coach up here. He can tell you more about it as we find out more,” Lester said in his opening statement.

When asked about Gronowski potentially playing against Wisconsin following the bye week, Lester offered this as his commentary.

“I hope so. It’s cloudy, but he’s rehabbing.”

On Saturday, Gronowski went to the medical tent to be examined. He emerged wearing the knee brace that he wore in the opening game of the season and tested out his mobility. Kirk Ferentz said on Saturday after the game that Gronowski couldn’t decelerate properly, so they had Hank Brown finish out the game at quarterback.

Thus far this season, Gronowski has completed 69 of 106 passes (64.2%) for 636 yards and three touchdowns. He has also throw two interceptions. Gronowski has also rushed 54 times for 150 yards and seven touchdowns.

If he cannot play, then Iowa will go with Hank Brown as the starting quarterback against the Badgers.

Brown has played in three games this season. He has completed 11 of 21 passes (54%) for 107 yards and one score. He also has one interception thrown and that took place against Indiana this past Saturday.
