Noah Shannon suspended for 2023 season
Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz announced today that starting defensive tackle Noah Shannon has been suspended for the 2023 season by the NCAA after their investigation into gambling among student-athletes in the state.
Shannon and the school will be filing an appeal, said Ferentz, who spoke with the media following practice in Iowa City today.
“Noah has been a topic of conversation and right now he does have a season suspension,” Ferentz said Wednesday morning after practice. “We are definitely going to appeal that and the department will appeal that. I am hoping that the appeal will reflect some new thinking on that.”
Ferentz went on to further defend his veteran defensive tackle.
“He did nothing that was criminal. I think the penalty was harsh,” he said. “I am hopeful that they will reconsider his case. I know he bet on one of our other sports teams here and I understand that might be a bad thing. He bet for them and got caught up in the emotion.”

A two-year starter for the Hawkeyes, Shannon decided to use his extra COVID year and return for a sixth season in 2023. He has been named honorable mention all-conference each of the past two seasons and has career totals of 107 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks.
In July, right before Big Ten Media Day, Shannon announced that he would not be attending due to the NCAA investigation into gambling at Iowa. So far, the other current football players named in the investigation have been backup kicker Aaron Blom and reserve wide receiver Jack Johnson, both of whom allegedly bet on Iowa football games, but that is not the case with Shannon as he is not facing any criminal charges.
Former Iowa players Reggie Bracy, now at Troy, and Arland Bruce IV, now at Oklahoma State, have also been named in the investigation.
