Looking for a bit of redemption from their mid-December loss to Michigan State in East Lansing, the Iowa women’s basketball team delivered on Thursday night. The Hawkeyes battled through a hectic third quarter and held on for a 74-61 win to advance to the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals.
After an out-of-rhythm, ugly first quarter that saw Michigan State take a 16-12 lead, the Hawkeyes answered with a 16-0 run to begin the second quarter and took a 32-25 lead into halftime. The third quarter brought plenty of adversity, with Lucy Olsen and Hannah Stuelke each getting whistled for their third fouls, while Jan Jensen picked up her first technical foul of the season. The Spartans took a 46-41 lead, but Iowa closed the quarter on an 8-0 run fueled by big minutes from Ava Heiden, taking a 54-46 lead they never relinquished. The Hawkeyes closed out the win, finishing with another 8-0 run to end the game.
