It may have been what Jan Jensen called “slodgy”, but the Iowa Women’s Basketball team got it done. With three players out due to various ailments, the shorthanded Hawkeyes defeated Western Illinois 86-69 to move to 7-0 on the season. It’s tied for the program’s third-longest undefeated start over the last 25 seasons.

Leading just 10-9 late in the first quarter, the Hawkeyes went on a 13-0 run that spanned into the second quarter and built a 44-25 halftime lead. The Leathernecks would rally a bit in the third quarter, coming within 51-38, but they were never much of a threat. Although Iowa never delivered the knockout blow, they still managed to come away with their fifth double-digit win of the season. Freshman Addie Deal led the way with a season-best 17 points, while Ava Heiden finished with a double-double 15 points and ten rebounds. Taylor McCabe also knocked down a season-best five three-pointers.
