The Iowa Women’s Hoops season is upon us and it’s time to start making some predictions. While my season prediction article won’t be out until Saturday or Sunday, I decided to poll the fanbase on Twitter to get their feelings on the upcoming season. Where will the Hawkeyes finish in the Big Ten? How many wins will they have? How far will they make it in the NCAA Tournament? Who will be the top newcomer? Who will lead the team in scoring? You guys voted and I gathered the results.

1. Who will lead the team in scoring this season?

This really hasn’t been a difficult question over the past few years, with players like Lucy Olsen, Caitlin Clark, Kathleen Doyle or Megan Gustafson leading the team in scoring in each of the past nine seasons. It seems pretty likely that a frontcourt player, Hannah Stuelke or Ava Heiden, will lead the way in scoring, but they are both in new roles this season. If not one of them, then who? I’d venture to guess than a number of the “other” picks were for true freshman Addie Deal, but that’s a lot of weight on her shoulders.

2. Which newcomer will make the biggest impact in their first year with the Hawkeyes?

Even with a highly touted freshman class, the answer to this question a year ago was an easy one, with Lucy Olsen transferring in from Villanova. This season, there’s a lot more to debate. Will it be one of the transfers, Chit-Chat Wright or Emely Rodriguez? Will it be the true freshman Addie Deal? Don’t forget about freshman center Layla Hays. No matter what way you slice it, some fresh faces are going to have a considerable impact this season.

3. Where will the Hawkeyes finish in the Big Ten Standings?

The Hawkeyes did not appear in the top five of the preseason Big Ten media or coaches’ poll, with UCLA, Maryland, Michigan, USC and Ohio State earning those honors. Iowa has finished in the top five in seven of the last 11 seasons, with all seven being top three finishes. They finished in a four-way tie for eighth last season with a 10-8 record in conference play.

4. Which record is closest to a realistic expectation for the Hawkeyes in year two under head coach Jan Jensen?

The Hawkeyes have a mix of veterans and youth, but this is still their youngest team since 2012, with nine underclassmen on the roster. What should we expect from this team in terms of their regular season record? The 2012-13 team with nine underclassmen went 21-13 and made the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Iowa has won 20+ games in each of the last nine seasons and in 16 of the last 18 seasons. According to the ESPN preseason Bracketology projection, the Hawkeyes will have 18 games against projected NCAA Tournament teams. Last season, the Hawkeyes played 16 games against NCAA Tournament participants, as well as an additional seven games against WBIT/WNIT teams.

5. What are the NCAA Tournament expectations in year two under head coach Jan Jensen?

The Hawkeyes were at the pinnacle of the sport for two seasons, with back-to-back national title game appearances. It was highly unlikely that they were going to be able to get near that finish last season, but they still finished 23-11 and made the second round of the NCAA Tournament. This year, the Hawkeyes enter the season ranked 21st in the preseason AP Poll. Iowa has made the tournament in seven straight seasons that one was held, including four trips to the Sweet Sixteen or further.
