Kansas State DC Joe Klanderman hired by Baylor for same position
After spending the last seven years at Kansas State, defensive coordinator Joe Klanderman is on the move. He has been hired by Baylor to hold the same position after the Bears defensive coordinator Matt Powledge left the program to take the same position at North Texas.
Klanderman was part of Chris Klieman‘s original staff at K-State. He spent the 2019 season as the safeties coach before Scottie Hazelton departed Kansas State to take the defensive coordinator position at Michigan State. After Hazelton’s departure, he was promoted to defensive coordinator along with safeties coach and has spent the last six seasons as the Wildcats defensive coordinator.
This season under Klanderman, K-State was sixth in total points allowed in the Big 12. His defense allowed 302 points which was good for 26.7 points per game. The most impressive turnaround by his defense this season was in turnovers. The Wildcats defense had one of the best teams in the country in terms of forcing turnovers with 26 total turnovers. The 13 interceptions ranked No. 5 in the Big 12 and the 13 fumbles recovered by Kansas State rank No. 2 in the Big 12. Under his direction, Kansas State ranked No. 1 in the Big 12 in turnovers forced over the last four seasons. His defense was also good at getting to the passer this season with 28 sacks ranking No. 6 in the Big 12.

Under his coaching, K-State has also had a solid run of safeties drafted into the NFL. Marques Sigle, Josh Hayes and Russ Yeast all transferred to the Wildcats and were drafted into the NFL after spending time under his coaching.
The news of Klanderman leaving Kansas State for Baylor comes after the news of Collin Klein being hired by K-State as the next head coach. He is the first staffer on the Wildcats staff to move on to a new school officially.
