Notes on the passing game

Kansas State offensive coordinator Matt Wells has been happy with the passing game early on for the Wildcats. There is no set number of passing attempts he wants Avery Johnson to have per game, but K-State has better wide receivers this year and are protecting Johnson well enough he is okay with the junior quarterback throwing more than maybe some anticipated.

Wells is most pleased with the zero turnovers from Johnson. However, he did note that his quarterback did put the ball in harms way a handful of times and was living right Saturday night. Johnson knows he cannot live like that in the future and him and Wells have discussed what went wrong on those throws. So far this season Johnson is also completing 68 percent of his passes, but Wells knows the number should be higher because he has missed eight throws due to inaccuracies.

More on the Kansas State running backs

The Kansas State offensive coordinator did not discuss the status of Wildcat running back Dylan Edwards. However, he was very pleased with redshirt freshman DeVon Rice. The Las Vegas product showed a lot of growth between game one and game two and provided a spark for Kansas State versus North Dakota.

Wells also singled out JB Price as someone who has a bright future in the K-State backfield and that the Wildcats may deploy Antonio Martin into game action.

A look at Army

Army is a tough and physical defense that is always in the right spots. Eric Ford can wreck a game as a pass rusher and also plays some stand up linebacker for the Black Knights. Linebackers Andon Thomas and Kalib Fortner were also singled out by the K-State offensive coordinator as players who have stood out to him on film.

Wells’ coaching career also started at Navy, so he has a tremendous amount of respect for Army and beating the Black Knights was a big deal early in his coaching career.
