Kansas State offensive MVP: Avery Johnson

Avery Johnson was really, really good in the loss to Army. He played with a lot of poise and was throwing the ball in the bucket time after time. The problem was Johnson, and the Kansas State offense barely had the ball. Especially in the second half. Johnson finished the game 15-for-25 for 172 yards and a score. He also had a tough luck interception on a ball deflected off Joe Jackson to seal the loss.

Jaron Tibbs had his best game at Kansas State with five catches for 61 yards and a touchdown. The Purdue transfer also had a drop on a great throw from Johnson, which honestly probably should have been ruled a fumble in the fourth quarter.

Defensive MVP: N/A

Kansas State’s defense does not get a player of the game. While the raw numbers do not look bad, K-State’s defense was poor once again and a major contributor in the loss to Army. Kansas State’s defense allowed Army to convert on 16 of their 29 third or fourth down attempts good for 55 percent. To really put numbers in perspective, the Black Knights had 29 third or fourth down attempts. Kansas State ran 43 total offensive plays.

While there was a special teams touchdown mixed in, K-State’s defense struggled so much the Wildcats went an hour of real time without an offensive play that was not a two-point conversion.

K-State special teams MVP: Bryce Noernberg

Bryce Noernberg had a heck of a redemption story Saturday. After fumbling a kickoff return last week, he took a kick 99 yards for a go-ahead touchdown and nearly scored on the opening kick of the game. Luis Rodriguez was also perfect on all of his kicks and honestly, it’s never felt like his kicks have been shaky.
