After one year in Baton Rouge, the former junior college product Connor Gilbreath has entered the transfer portal, leaving LSU, he announced on Wednesday afternoon on social media.

Gilbreath, joined the Tigers ahead of the 2023 season to be a reliable blocking tight end at 6-foot-5 and 265 pounds out of Redding, California. He played in all 13 of LSU’s games in 2023, but played a total of just 56 snaps, with 18 coming against Grambling State. He was heavily featured on goal line and special teams opportunities in his one year with the Tigers.

Gilbreath enters the portal with three years to play two seasons at his next destination.

LSU’s tight end room consists of Mason Taylor, Mac Markway, and Kamorreun Pimpton leaving the spring, with five-star Trey’Dez Green joining the program this summer. With new tight ends coach Slade Nagle in the fold, it appears certain LSU’s passing game will include more targets to the tight ends in 2024.

LSU will continue to juggle roster spots as players come and go during this second transfer portal window. In general, Brian Kelly and his staff will continue to work to get down to the 85-man scholarship limit over this summer as they put the finishing touches on this new-look roster for 2024.

Of note, Southeastern Conference rules call for athletes who transfer inside the league during the NCAA Spring Transfer Portal Window must sit a year before playing. Texas and Oklahoma will follow the rule this year since they join the conference in the fall.

The spring window runs for 14 days, but after a student-athlete is officially in the portal, there is no rush on making a decision as long as they are properly enrolled at a new institution in time for fall camp. Commitments do not have to be made during the two-week window. Graduate transfers, like Paez, are allowed to enter the portal at any time.
