LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers has been selected with the No. 6 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft by the New York Giants.

On Thursday night in Detroit, just four picks after fellow LSU alum Jayden Daniels walked across the stage, Nabers heard his name called and joined an elite fraternity.

Nabers leaves Baton Rouge as the most-accomplished wide receiver in program history.

In LSU’s matchup with Wisconsin in the ReliaQuest Bowl on January 1, Nabers chose to suit up and play instead of opt out and prepare for the draft. The decision paid off. Nabers moved into the No. 1 spot in the LSU record book for most career receiving yards.

LSU standout Josh Reed held the record prior to Nabers after he totaled 3,001 receiving yards across three seasons from 1999-2001. More than 20 years later, Nabers entered the bowl game with 2,980 receiving yards in three seasons, putting him 21 yards short of the record. Nabers broke the record on an 11-yard catch to put him at 3,003 yards for his career to go with 21 touchdowns on 189 receptions.

“That record hasn’t been broken in over 20 years,” he said. “I came here with a chip on my shoulder. I didn’t care who I was playing or how many games we had left, I’ve never left my team out there to dry.”

Nabers marks another first round receiver for LSU

Nabers sits at No. 1 in LSU history for most receiving yards and most catches across a career and now becomes the 9th LSU receiver to ever be taken in the first round. It’s become commonplace in recent times with Justin Jefferson and Ja’Marr Chase in recent years, and Odell Beckham before that, but Nabers’ continues to pave his own way and make history in the process.

“We can talk about numbers and all the things that are important, but physicality and the ability to separate from great players, there has to be something you look for,” Brian Kelly said after LSU’s Pro Day. “When you watch film you see him separate from great players in the SEC and today you saw a 42-inch vertical and then you see 4.3 and you say ‘OK I get it.’ The ability to separate on the field is now backed u by the physical prowess we see in those numbers, What it does is it validates what you see on film and it shows he can separate with the ball in his hands and after the catch. I’ve seen him and I’m certainly going to advocate on his behalf — I don’t think there’s a better receiver in the country.”

Now, Nabers waits to hear his teammates name, as Brian Thomas Jr. was another excellent receiver for the Tigers and expects to be a first round pick on Thursday night.
