Michigan State announced the hiring of cornerbacks coach Demetrice Martin back in mid-January, as the former Spartan defensive back joins secondary coach Blue Adams in coaching the Spartan defensive backfield. Martin, known as 'Coach Meat' by players and recruits was previously coaching cornerbacks for Oregon under Dan Lanning. Martin has spent the majority of his coaching career out west. He coached cornerbacks at Colorado (2020-21) and Arizona (2018-19). He also spent time as defensive backs coach at UCLA (2012-17) and Washington (2009-11). Beginning his college career at wide receiver with Michigan State, the Pasadena, Calif., native played four season in East Lansing. Martin earned First-Team All-Big Ten honors in 1994, after transitioning to defensive back. He led the conference with seven interceptions. Since arriving in back East Lansing, Martin has worked to set the 2025 recruiting board, extending a handful of offers to recruits he previously had relationships, along with some new offers as well. Martin has an elite reputation as a recruiter, winning Pac-12 recruiter of the year in 2023 by multiple services. Part of the deep success Martin has had on the recruiting trail, particularly out west, begins with his relationships with the high school coaches. SpartanMag.com caught up with several national powerhouse high school coaches and recruits to get their insight on what Martin brings to the Michigan State recruiting trail.
