Three things we learned about the Spartans during Michigan State’s turn at Big Ten Media Days, Thursday at the Mandalay Bay casino and hotel, two questions and one prediction. Second-year coach Jonathan Smith and newly-hired athletic director J Batt said all the right things about one another on Thursday. And that’s what you should expect. They’re both well-composed, gentlemanly guys. They know the game well, they know their jobs well, and they’ve got their heads down, grind-stoning it. It’s a potentially awkward situation, with Smith in year two of his tenure, working to get a program’s wheels properly pumped, while the man who hired him, Alan Haller, was fired just 17 months after Smith came aboard.
