EAST LANSING, Mich. - Jonathan Smith wants competition and depth throughout the roster. He certainly seems to be getting it at the inside linebacker and defensive tackle positions. And it’s only getting thicker. Smith didn’t cite many defensive standouts from Saturday’s scrimmage, after stating that the defensive side of the ball had the upper hand most of the afternoon. Instead, he said waves of quality play ruled the day. But one name came to mind when pressed for specifics. “I thought depth defensively showed up,” Smith said. “A lot of guys, a lot of reps, played sound defense pretty much throughout. And so that kind of reconfirmed some of our feeling.” When asked to name a standout or two, Smith mentioned Marcellius Pulliam (6-2, 234, Jr., Tyrone, Ga.).
