EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State’s failure to clear the puck out of their own zone in the final seconds of the third period resulted in a turnover and three quick shots on goal during a goal-mouth scramble which ended with New Hampshire’s Marty Lavins scoring with 5.2 seconds remaining, giving the Wildcats a stunning 4-3 victory over the No. 2 Spartans, Thursday night at Munn Ice Arena. Michigan State battled back from 2-1 and 3-2 deficits to tie the game at 15:39 of the third period on a one-timer from Tommi Männistö off a great drive to the net and feed from freshman defenseman Sean Barnhill. But Michigan State couldn’t carry that momentum to victory. The two teams will play again at 7:30 p.m. on Friday (BTN Plus). “Obviously, that's a super tough finish,” said Michigan State head coach Adam Nightingale. “A scramble, we got four guys trying to play goalie. And a little bit lost our head there, too, and instead of protecting the backside. So I think Trey (Augustine) definitely gave us a chance to win, like he does most nights he plays. So we’ve got to be sharper in front of him.” (MORE inside SpartanMag. Join SpartanMag now - $1 for the first week - and enjoy a complimentary year of The Athletic included with your membership.)
