Rivals300 Chesapeake (Va.) Oscar Smith wide receiver Travis Johnson officially signed with Michigan on Wednesday.

Here is everything you need to know about the talented pass catcher.

The Skinny

Height: 6-3
Weight: 180
Industry Ranking: No. 14 wide receiver, No. 112 overall
Interesting Facts: Led Oscar Smith to a 15-0 record and a state championship as a junior. Also lettered in basketball and led Oscar Smith to an appearance in the state semifinals as a junior. Took a break from football to focus on basketball before returning to the sport as a freshman. Older brother, TJ, plays tight end for Southern Miss. Will enroll early at Michigan.

Recruitment

Michigan offered Johnson as an underclassman and made him a top priority at the wide receiver position. Michigan and Penn State were considered the leaders for the majority of the process. The Wolverines ultimately won him over in July. Michigan wide receivers coach Ron Bellamy led the way in his recruitment.

He Said It

“I loved my official visit. I enjoyed getting to spend time with Coach (Ron) Bellamy and Coach (Sherrone) Moore as well as my Virginia guys — I can’t wait to be with all of them. I can’t wait to get down to Ann Arbor. Michigan is a winning program. They have a great academic program. They have great people. “I love what Coach (Chip) Lindsey did at North Carolina with Drake Maye, Omarion Hampton and all of those guys. I think I can go in there and play early. Bryce Underwood is a great guy to get the ball from.”

They Said It

“Michigan is going to be another world, but he’s on a mission. He wasn’t afraid to go anywhere in the country. I’m very excited for Travis. “He’s very explosive. He can make any catch in the world. He’s faster than everybody thinks he is. Once he gets that ball in his hands, he can create some YAC. He can go inside or outside. He’s able to go up and get it. All around, he’s a great receiver and a great athlete.” — Oscar Smith assistant head coach Jahvoni Simmons

Scouting Report

“There is no doubt that Johnson is an an elite athlete and a polished receiver, but the biggest thing that was missing was verified times. Johnson is a star basketball player for Oscar Smith and focused on that this winter/spring as opposed to running track. I’m not exactly sure how fast Johnson is, but he stretches the field every time I see him. Johnson scored on two 40-yard-plus deep posts, where he ran by the corner and got behind the defense with ease. Johnson is definitely fast enough, especially when you consider the fact that he’s a bigger-bodied wide out at 6-foot-3, 180 pounds. Johnson gave up football before picking it back up as a freshman — he thought he was going to go to college for basketball. That athleticism pops on Friday nights. Johnson has excellent body control, bends well in and out of breaks and has superb leaping ability. Johnson still has plenty of upside, but he’s much further along as an actual route runner than you would think for a guy who took a break and has never played football year round. To my knowledge, Johnson hasn’t received individual training, either. Johnson is the rare high floor, high ceiling recruit who should make an immediate impact in Ann Arbor. I expect him to play significantly as a true freshman next season.” — The Wolverine’s EJ Holland
