Newsstand: Bryce Underwood to join rare Michigan quarterback history

The Michigan Wolverines are set to start true freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood in Saturday’s season opener against New Mexico, pending the official announcement from the program.
Underwood would be the fourth Michigan freshman to start the season at the position, joining Rick Leach in 1975, Chad Henne in 2004 and Tate Forcier in 2009.
Underwood was the No. 1 overall player in the 2025 class and a consensus top prospect, lining him up for special things right out of the box. After a storied high school career, now he gets the chance to make his mark just down the road from Belleville High School, where he starred in the prep ranks.
“Personality, he’s a quiet kid by nature, but when he knows you, he’ll talk,” Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore said on Aug. 12. “He’s got an affectionate personality, great young man, obviously well documented with family. Jay and Beverly have done a great job raising him. Just comes to work every day, lunch pail, ready to go. Does everything the right way and attacks the right way. A pleasure to be around.
“Expectations for whoever the starting quarterback is, it’s to raise the level of the team. Be leaders of the offense. The quarterback has to be the captain of that room and that offense. Whoever that is, that’s what I want him to be.”

Michigan quote of the day
“One, I think development. I need to believe that the coach can develop me and get me where I want to be. Two, I want a coach that is all-in about the sport— not just me, but about every guy in there. I need that good relationship, bond with the whole staff, to feel like I’m at home. I just want to find my second home. That’s it.”
