Travis Johnson is ready to make his decision.

The On300 wide receiver out of Chesapeake (Va.) Oscar Smith will announce his commitment today at 12:00 p.m. ET. We will be streaming it live on The Wolverine Youtube page.

Johnson, who is ranked as the No. 23 wide receiver and No. 161 overall recruit nationally, per the On3 Industry Ranking, is considering Michigan, North Carolina, Penn State, South Carolina and a few others.

Here is a closer look at where things stand.

Why It Will Be Michigan

Michigan offered Johnson more than a year ago and has made him a top priority for the entire cycle. The Wolverines hosted Johnson for an official visit on June 13 and took full control of this recruitment. Even before his OV, optimism was growing around Ann Arbor. Johnson felt at home during his time on campus and bonded well with the staff as well as fellow Virginia native and freshman cornerback Shamari Earls. It appears head coach Sherrone Moore, wide receivers coach Ron Bellamy, offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey and the rest of the staff have done enough to win this recruitment.

Why It Won’t Be Michigan

Penn State is still pushing hard for Johnson and is trying to turn the tides before he goes public with his decision. PSU has also been a constant in Johnson’s recruitment and has hosted him for a number of visits. Penn State head coach James Franklin is personally invested in this recruitment. North Carolina emerged as a bit of a dark horse late during official visit season. The Tar Heels actually hosted him for his final OV before the dead period. North Carolina is looking to shock the world here.

EJ’s Prediction

I put an On3 Prediction in favor of Michigan shortly after Johnson’s official visit came to an end. Going into the decision, I still feel very confident that the Wolverines can win him over. While Penn State hasn’t given up, all signs still point to the Wolverines. Michigan simply checks a lot of boxes for what Johnson is looking for in his future school. It would be surprising if Johnson didn’t side with Michigan later today.

They Said It

“(Michigan) needs me to come in and make an immediate impact. I’m excited to see the offense under (freshman quarterback) Bryce Underwood and Chip Lindsey, the new offensive coordinator. They have a couple of more pieces at wide receiver from the portal, so I’m expecting them to pass the ball more.”
