Savion Hiter receives fifth star from Rivals, rankings updates on top Michigan targets

Michigan’s 2026 recruiting class ranks No. 9 nationally after a major ranking reshuffling. Rivals believes the Wolverines have the fourth-best class in the Big Ten, and the program is still looking to add a few critical commits before signing day.
Elite running back Savion Hiter headlined Monday’s rankings release. He was already a five-star prospect in the Industry Ranking, but Rivals officially awarded the nation’s No. 1 running back his fifth star this week. He is 1 of 12 recruits to receive that accolade at this point in the recruiting cycle.
Hiter has not announced a decision date, and the running back from Mineral (Va.) Louisa County High continues to consider Michigan, Ohio State, Tennessee and Georgia as he closes in on his commitment. He’s the No. 12 recruit nationally and arguably the top overall prospect on the Wolverines’ recruiting board.
“An extremely fluid and smooth mover who changes directions effortlessly,” Rivals director of scouting and rankings Charles Power wrote in Hiter’s scouting report. “Shows excellent acceleration. Cuts on a dime and makes defenders miss in space. Runs with pace and instincts. A strong tackle-breaker who runs through contact due to a strong leg drive. A phenomenal high school football player who also makes big plays on defense. Has the potential and upside to be one of the best running back prospects in several cycles.”
Checking in 10 spots behind him, Davon Benjamin retained his title as the No. 1 cornerback in the country. The 5-11.5, 170-pound defensive back dropped 2 spots in the overall ranking to No. 22. Michigan remains a top contender for California’s No. 3 recruit alongside Oregon, Texas and Washington. He plans on making his commitment Aug. 2.

Elite athlete Salesi Moa, who could play either side of the ball in college, fell from No. 35 to No. 49. The Top 50 recruit recently postponed his decision. Utah and Tennessee look like frontrunners here. He likes Michigan but is leaning towards playing offense at the next level, and the Wolverines like the Ogden (Utah) Fremont High standout best at defensive back.
Deuce Geralds, Michigan’s primary uncommitted target on the defensive line board, climbed one spot in the rankings to No. 146. The 6-1, 268-pound prospect from Suwanee (Ga.) Collins Hill High will make his decision Aug. 2. Oregon is the trending team for Rivals’ No. 14 defensive lineman, but U-M remains in the mix.
Nick Abrams, a coveted linebacker out of Owings Mills (Md.) McDonogh School, fell from No. 163 to No. 247 in this week’s rankings. He will announce his commitment Wednesday from a Final 4 of Michigan, Georgia, Oregon and Alabama. The Ducks and Bulldogs have the most momentum around them at this point.
Michigan is showing interest in a couple of Big 12 safety commits— Kansas pledge James Dunnigan Jr. and Baylor commit Jordan Deck. Dunnigan dropped from No. 280 to No. 297, and Deck fell out of the Top 300.
