Former Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore charged with home invasion, stalking

Former Michigan Wolverines head coach Sherrone Moore is facing home invasion, stalking and breaking and entering charges from his police detainment hours after his firing on Wednesday, according to a release.

The summary of the charges he is facing, via the Washtenaw County prosecutors’ office:

  • Home Invasion in the third degree, in violation of MCL 750.110a(4), for allegedly unlawfully entering the victim’s residence to commit the crime of stalking, and committing that crime while in the residence. Home Invasion in the third degree is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a $2,000 fine.
  • Stalking, in violation of MCL 750.411h, for allegedly engaging in a willful course of conduct involving repeated or continuing harassment of the victim.
Stalking is a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
  • Breaking and Entering or Entering Without Breaking, in violation of MCL 750.115(2), for allegedly unlawfully entering the dwelling of a victim. with whom Mr. Moore had a dating relationship. A violation of this statute is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 90 days in jail and a $500 fine.

Moore was arraigned Friday and will appear in-person in a hearing on Jan. 22, 2026. He was ordered to wear a GPS tracker and cannot leave the state without persmission. Moore was also ordered to have absolutely no contact with the victim and that he must refrain from the use of alcohol, marijuana or any other drugs and also continue mental health treatment.

The prosecutor stated that the victim and Moore had a relationship “for a number of years” but that she broke it off on Monday before disclosing the relationship to Michigan. Moore came to the victim’s residence and threatened self-harm, saying, “I am going to kill myself and make you watch” and “my blood is on your hands” after grabbing several butter knives and a pair of scissors. He left when she said she was calling the police. Pittsfield police said Friday that Moore was unarmed when he entered the home through an unlocked door of the victim.

A statement released from the Pittsfield police department late Wednesday said he was being investigated for assault after being picked up at the 300 block of Ann Arbor Saline Road:

“The Pittsfield Police Department responded to the above location at the above date and time for the purposes of investigating an alleged assault. The Department has received multiple media requests for information. A suspect in this case was taken into custody. This incident does not appear to be random in nature, and there appears to be no ongoing threat to the community. The suspect was lodged at the Washtenaw County Jail pending review of charges by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor. At this time, the investigation is ongoing. Given the nature of the allegations, the need to maintain the integrity of the investigation, and its current status at this time, we are prohibited from releasing additional details. Further details regarding the incident will be released as soon as permissible.”

ESPN’s Dan Wetzel was the first to report that Moore was detained by police on Wednesday following his dismissal due to an inappropriate relationship with a Michigan staffer.

“The City of Saline Police Department assisted in locating and detaining former University of Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore,” the department told ESPN. “Mr. Moore was turned over to the Pittsfield Township Police Department for investigation into potential charges.”
