Michigan basketball: Final summer league stats for U-M participants

Michigan Wolverines basketball had eight former players competing in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, which ran through July 17. All had some level of success, while some received some good news while they were participating.

That included rookie Caleb Houstan, who signed a four-year, $8.2 million contract with the Orlando Magic. Per reports, while terms of the contract were not immediately available, the first two seasons are guaranteed. The Magic hold a team option for a fourth year.

Houstan went in the second round, No. 32 overall, after averaging 10.1 points, four rebounds and 1.4 assists in 34 games last season at Michigan. He was streaky but led the team with 60 triples, starting every game.

Here’s a look at how Houstan and every other former Michigan player in the NBA Summer League fared:

Eli Brooks, Indiana Pacers

The Pacers finished 2-3, and Brooks played in the final three games with the club — but not much. He averaged 9.7 minutes per game, went 4-for-7 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the free throw line. The former Michigan shooting guard missed both of his triples.

Brooks averaged 1.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists against only one turnover. His best game was his last, an 84-69 loss to Phoenix in which he played 15 minutes and notched six points, four assists and three rebounds.

Chaundee Brown Jr., Atlanta Hawks

The former Michigan guard played well, averaging 14.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and an assist per game in 23.4 minutes per game for Atlanta (2-3 overall). He notched 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting (1-for-1 on triples) with five rebounds in a win over Miami July 12. He scored 17, going 5-for-10 from the floor, 2-for-3 from long range and 5-for-5 from the line in a loss to Cleveland July 16.

Moussa Diabate, Los Angeles Clippers

The former Michigan forward posted 10 points (3-4 FG, 4-9 FT), seven rebounds, one steal and one block in 22 minutes of a 94-76 blowout win over the Memphis Grizzlies July 9. He scored nine points and added eight rebounds in a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers July 12. The Clippers shut him down after that — he didn’t play in the last three gams for Los Angeles (2-3).

He averaged 9.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in his two games, both as a starter. He made seven of 10 shots and four of nine free throws, and he also hit his only triple.

Caleb Houstan Orlando Magic

Houstan played 28 minutes and went off for 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field and 5-of-9 from three-point range, with six rebounds and a plus-14 on-floor rating in a 91-77 win over the Houston Rockets July 7. He struggled a bit after that.

The Magic (2-3) sat him in the last game, but he went 0-for-12 from long range in the two games prior, starting in losses to Oklahoma City and New York July 11 and 14, respectively. He scored four points on two-for-10 shooting in the former and two points on 1-for-8 in the latter, playing 30 and 26 minutes.

The former Michigan wing averaged 8.5 points and 3.8 rebounds in four games, shooting 32.5 percent from the floor and 25 percent from long range.

Zavier Simpson, Orlando Magic

The former Michigan point guard started the last three games for 2-3 Orlando and scored in double figures in all of them. Included — 10 points, nine assists and six rebounds in a July 14 loss to New York and 10 points, five assists and five rebounds in a July 16 loss to Detroit.

Simpson averaged 8.2 points, 6.2 assists and 4.2 rebounds in five games. He shot 35.7 percent from the floor, made two of seven triples and nine of 15 free throws.

DeVante’ Jones, Denver Nuggets

The former Michigan point guard scored 11 points in his three games played, averaging 2.0 assists. He notched six with two assists in 27 minutes of a July 17 loss to Utah. He averaged 15.3 points in his three games and shot 36.4 percent from the floor, missing his only two three-point attempts.

Isaiah Livers, Detroit Pistons

The former Michigan forward had a rough shooting night, going 3-of-10 from the field and 1-of-8 from deep in an 81-78 win over the Portland Trail Blazers July 7. He added four rebounds, one assist, one steal and two blocks, and was credited for his stellar defense. He rebounded by scoring a team-high 20 points (5-8 FG, 4-5 3PT, 6-7 FT) and added five rebounds and one assist in a 105-99 win over the Washington Wizards July 9.

The Pistons shut him down the last three games. They’d finish 3-2, with Livers averaging 14 points and 4.5 rebounds in his two games. He shot 44.4 percent from the floor, 38.5 from long range.

D.J. Wilson, Toronto Raptors

The 26-year-old former Michigan forward was signed to a two-year contract by by the Toronto Raptors July 8, and he immediately joined the squad in Las Vegas. He notched his best game in a July 13 win over Utah, scoring 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including 3-for-6 from three-point range and 5-for-5 from the line with nine rebounds. He scored 10 with five rebounds and two triples in a July 12 loss to Chicago.

Wilson averaged 10.5 points and 5.3 rebounds in 25.8 minutes of four games for 4-1 Toronto.
