Michigan basketball won its season opener on Monday night by a score of 75-56 over visting Purdue Fort Wayne, but it was more than just the first victory of the 2022-23 season. It was also the first time that head coach Juwan Howard coached his sons – Jett and Jace – in a college basketball game.

There was a moment in the contest where Jett assisted a 3-point basket up the floor to Jace, which was a milestone moment for the Howard family. The head coach spoke about it after the win.

“It’s a dream come true. Because that’s something that never happened,” Howard said after the game. “Every day, it’s one of those moments where you have a special time in your life where you get an opportunity to coach at your alma mater, and then knowing the times when you were in the NBA, or you were coaching in the NBA, how much you love your alma mater. And we talked about the only college they will go to would be Michigan, teaching them the fight song and Michigan and Ohio State playing that football rivalry game,  dressing up all my kids and my wife and my dog in Michigan and maize and blue.

“To see it all come to fruition, and seeing the opportunity, how it’s presented, with the growth of both boys, and since watching them, like you just touched on, in the backyard, watch them in high school practice, then AAU, and now here in Ann Arbor, in front of our great crowd cheering them on, it is really a blessing.

“Also, to see a mom, I peeked my eye over at her, because I could hear her. Like, the excitement and you know, she has a smile that she’s having each and every possession — it’s a blessing.”

Michigan quote of the day

Both students of the game and that’s — they’re both at the highest level with that. You can’t get anything by Blake Corum. I mean, he is so focused. And all times, he’s like a chess player that can think several moves ahead. Whether it’s protections, whether it’s blocking schemes, he knows what our blocking schemes is, he knows what the defense is, he knows what the blitzes are, not only who he has, but what others have — very similar to Frank Gore in that regard. Two outstanding students of the game, know the game and also have a tremendous feel for the game. There’s no doubt that the Blake will be, in my opinion, right on that same dance floor as Frank Gore in every way, as a player.
