TheWolverine.com‘s John Borton is joined by Michigan play-by-play voice Brian Boesch to recap men’s basketball’s opening weekend of the NCAA Tournament. They also preview the Sweet Sixteen showdown with the Villanova Wildcats, which is set for Thursday in San Antonio.

The conversation began with a look back at how Michigan got here.

“From a Michigan standpoint, they figured out the right time to string together a couple of wins,” Boesch said. “For them to go ping-pong it back-and-forth for more than a month and what we saw in the first trip to Indianapolis against Indiana…we all knew what they unearthed this weekend was feasible. To unleash it on Colorado State and Tennessee, two really good teams who would have been threats had they emerged from this pod, it speaks to what Michigan can do.

To me, the two guys who were the stars of the show in both games were Hunter Dickinson and Eli Brooks. When you look back, Brooks has never had a better offensive game. He had a game in the Round of 32 last year against LSU, but [the Tennessee game] eclipsed it. One of the best defenses in college basketball, he just has a will to keep this thing going. The extra load that he had to shoulder, you cannot help but feel so good for him. The whole team, but Eli in particular.”

Michigan vs. Villanova game info

The Wolverines and Wildcats will meet on Thursday evening at 7:15 p.m. ET with TBS drawing the broadcast assignment. The game will take place in San Antonio, the same spot both teams met in the 2018 national championship game.

Vegas has also weighed in on Thursday’s contest. Villanova opened as a five-point favorite with some sportsbooks showing 4.5 points.

Michigan and Villanova have met twice with both games coming in 2018. They lost to the Wildcats by a score of 79-62 on April 2, 2018 in the title game, then came back in November and blew them out 73-46 in a non-conference matchup. Thursday night will serve as the rubber match in the series.
