The Michigan Wolverines are headed over to the loser’s bracket of the 2023 Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas, taking on the Stanford Cardinal on Thanksgiving night. U-M is coming off a 71-67 loss to Memphis in the opening round, while Stanford took Arkansas to a pair of overtimes before suffering a defeat.

Michigan is out to a 3-2 start to the season, but losers of two straight to Long Beach State (94-86) and Memphis. U-M’s wins have come over UNC Asheville, Youngstown State and St. John’s. Stanford matches the Wolverines with a 3-2 record with wins over CSU Northridge, Sacramento State and Eastern Washington.

The Wolverines trailed for all but four minutes of Wednesday night’s game against Memphis with its last lead of the night coming at 6-4 early in the game. Every time it felt like Michigan might have a run on the way, the Tigers sniffed it out and were able to hold onto the victory.

Both Michigan and Stanford have boasted high-powered offenses early in the year. U-M is averaging 91.5 points per contest, while Stanford comes in at 87.8. It could make for a frenetic game with KenPom’s 80th and 107th ranked defenses squaring off, respectively.

Things to know

• Michigan head coach Juwan Howard was on the bench on Wednesday evening as an observer while acting head coach Phil Martelli ran the show. Howard, who has spent the last several weeks working his way back from heart surgery, released a statement after the loss to Memphis on dialing up his activity with the program: “It was exciting to be out there with our young men and staff. They have been so supportive and caring. I truly feel blessed. Today was just another step forward. I am looking forward to making a full return.”
• No timetable has been given for Howard’s full return to the program.
• Michigan’s overall Battle 4 Atlantis record is now at 5-2. The Wolverines won the event in Howard’s first season on the bench in 2019-20.
• Michigan will play either Texas Tech or Northern Iowa on Friday.
