The Michigan Wolverines grabbed a hard-earned 30-27 win over Nebraska in Saturday’s Big Ten opener, helping them move to 3-1 on the season and a 1-0 mark in conference play heading into the bye week.

Michigan was dominant in the trenches on both sides of the ball and turned the page from the Oklahoma loss a few weeks ago, grabbing a win in a hostile environment against a Nebraska team looking for a signature victory for head coach Matt Rhule.

TheWolverine.com’s Anthony Broome and former Michigan defensive lineman Ryan Van Bergen discussed the victory shortly after it went final.

”This was the bounce back that you needed to see from the first away game at Oklahoma, especially offensively,” Van Bergen said on the show. “I thought that you saw us be a little bit more creative, a little more dynamic, move the ball around the field. A lot of guys saw different targets. Obviously had the run game going, and that’s always nice to be able to rely on that.

“But overall, I just thought you saw this team have a cohesive response to what was not their best performance in Norman, Oklahoma. And to see this team come together and put a performance together like that against a good Nebraska team on the road, that’s a sign of good things to come with a lot of football left to play.”

Broome replied: “ They often say they don’t count how you did it. They count how many wins you have. And to get out to a 1-0 start in Big Ten play without your head coach and with some of the mistakes that they did make…so much of this was turning the page from an Oklahoma game.

“This also allows you to…you don’t want to build losses into the schedule, but this is kind of one you needed to get to give yourself some wiggle room here. It’s an early pecking order game for not only the Big Ten standings, but a lot of people think that Nebraska might be a fringe playoff team and their schedule has some runway that could allow for that.”

”Michigan whipped them up front on both sides of the ball. You can make the case, they should have dominated them more. But when push comes to shove…you get to run the best play in sports, which is victory formation, kneel things out, go celebrate with your team.”
