The Michigan Wolverines handled their business on Saturday night in a 30-10 victory over the visiting Fresno State Bulldogs at home, part of a larger weekend where the newly expanded Big Ten Conference showed out.

On the opening weekend of the college football season, the Big Ten went 17-1 with the lone loss coming from Minnesota, who missed a field goal as the clock hit zero on Thursday night in a 19-17 loss to North Carolina. Two other conference schools played on Thursday in Rutgers, who had a 44-7 win over Howard, and Illinois, who blew out Eastern Illinois 45-0.

A pair of Big Ten members played on Friday night with Michigan State grabbing a 16-10 win over Florida Atlantic and Wisconsin taking down Western Michigan 28-14.

Outside of Michigan’s victory, 11 other conference members handled their opponents in Week 1 with No. 2 Ohio State beating Akron 52-6, No. 3 Oregon beating Idaho 24-14, No. 8 Penn State beating West Virginia 34-12, No. 25 Iowa beating Illinois State 40-0, Maryland blowing out UConn 50-7, Purdue blanking Indiana State 49-0, Indiana beating Florida International 31-7, Nebraska beating UTEP, Northwestern grinding it out against Miami (OH) 13-6, UCLA edging out Hawaii 16-13 and Washington stomping Weber State 35-3.

Sunday night was the marquee game of the slate with No. 23 USC beating No. 13 LSU 27-20 in a thriller in Vegas.

The Big Ten will be in the spotlight again in Week 2 with Michigan taking on the Texas Longhorns. The Wolverines are 5.5-point underdogs with the over/under set at 49.5 in a noon kickoff on FOX.

Michigan quote of the day

“Well we talk about how does Texas fit in the SEC, and we say they fit very well. Well they’re going to get tested, because you know Sherrone Moore is going to run the football and see if the Longhorns can hold up against the run. With the running quarterback, if you’re Texas you’ve got to be able to push the ball down the field.”
