Wolverine TV: Fall camp preview and predicting position battles

Michigan football kicks off its fall camp on Aug. 2 and there are plenty of storylines to sift through as the team works itself into shape for 2023. The Wolverines have plenty of questions on both sides of the ball despite the fact that so much production returns from the 2022 campaign.

Offensively, it starts with the offensive line. Head coach Jim Harbaugh told the media last week that he believes he has as many as 10 starting-caliber players up front with only Trevor Keegan and Zak Zinter locked in at the guard spots, presumably. But there are also position battles at backup quarterback, No. 3 running back and with the pass catchers at both tight end and wide receiver.

Michigan’s offensive storylines are also headlined by a potential leap forward from quarterback J.J. McCarthy and how much more the team can put on his shoulders. It might not have to, though, thanks to a star-studded backfield duo of Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards. Could they see the field at the same time? If so, Michigan’s offensive attack might be all that more dangerous to stop as defenses hone in on the poison to pick.

Defensively, position battles at No. 2 cornerback and in the EDGE rotation might be the two biggest question marks on the team. There are plenty of candidates to fill each role, and the Wolverines are hoping that both are answered emphatically as they fill out another deep roster of versatile, athletic defenders.

The Wolverine’s Anthony Broome and Clayton Sayfie broke down each storyline by position group and made some predictions for who wins the battles in this week’s Monday night live show.

The Monday night live show with Broome, Sayfie and Chris Balas broadcasts each week at 6 p.m. ET on our YouTube channel with the replay available after and in all feeds wherever podcasts are consumed.
