Michigan football had legend Charles Woodson in attendance for the 34-27 win over Maryland. Woodson was handling broadcast duties for the FOX pregame show and found himself on the sidelines before the game.

Woodson and sophomore quarterback J.J. McCarthy were spotted having a conversation and the former Heisman Trophy shared some wisdom with the Michigan signal-caller.

“He was just telling what was going on in the game and his insights and all of that,” McCarthy told the media after the game. “But the big thing with him was, just use my legs more. God gave me them for a reason, and while I’m sitting back there and I’m not seeing anything open, just run. I took that wholeheartedly, and that’s something I really need to do. It was just great GOAT advice right there.”

McCarthy finished the day with 220 yards and 2 touchdowns on 18-of-26 passing, but there were opportunities left on the field throughout the day. Ball security is something that can, and will, improve for the Michigan quarterback.

“The one fumble I had, I was seat-belting it, like I was always told to,” McCarthy said. “I was just squeezing too hard. Once one little budge happened the ball came out. That’s always a priority for us — ball security. I’ve just got to do a better job.

“That’s one of those plays that I want back. I’ve just got to get rid of the ball, make sure I don’t get into a situation like that. I kind of knew I was down, just because the ball hit the ground when I was trying to stay up. That’s two plays I really want back.”

Michigan football quote of the day

“Special teams was on point once again. Our special teams unit is really good. Don’t think we’ve had a punt return go over five years. It’s incredible. Lot of credit to Brad Robbins and the cover teams. Jay and the staff  … just feel like you go into these games without motivating — how much pride our guys take in special teams and how hard we work at it that it’s going to be you expect to win the special teams battle.

“Our guys did again today, and that was huge. We needed all of it.”
