20 days until Michigan football: Jyaire Hill an intriguing name heading into 2023
There’s much anticipation heading into the Michigan Wolverines football season, and TheWolverine.com is counting down the days until the Sept. 2 opener against East Carolina. We’ll discuss current Michigan events, the upcoming season and/or take a look at a significant number that correlates with how many days remain until kickoff, whether it be a player’s jersey number, a year, a date, a score, etc.
Michigan football freshman cornerback Jyaire Hill has some work to do before seeing the field in Ann Arbor, but he could be a riser throughout the season.
Hill was a four-star recruit and the No. 165 prospect int he 2023 class, per the On3 Industry Ranking. It is not that he is an unheralded prospect, especially given that he was an early signing day coup and the class’ top addition. It is the fact that Michigan does not have a plug-and-play No. 2 cornerback to put on the other side of Will Johnson in 2023. Hill, like most freshmen, will be drinking out of the firehose early and will endure his lumps. But he also has a shot to rocket up the two-deep depth chart.
Josh Wallace, Ja’Den McBurrows and Amorion Walker will continue to compete for the No. 2 job, but those in the know expect Hill to mix in at some point. How quickly they prove to be acceptable options – and how much depth the Wolverines find out they have – will determine what happens next.
But Hill is a lengthy, athletic ballhawk that might have the best non-Johnson skill-set in the room. Freshman corners have to be cut from a different cloth to see the field early, but this might just be one to keep an eye on.
