Michigan Wolverines football named its new radio broadcast team that will be in the booth this fall and going forward, with Doug Karsch taking over play-by-play duties and Jon Jansen becoming the full-time color commentator. Karsch joined both Jansen’s In The Trenches podcast and The Wolverine Podcast with our Chris Balas to discuss his new gig. With Jansen, Karsch made it clear that he’s determined to make the broadcasts about the Michigan team, saying they’re the stars and Jansen is the co-star.
Being among the names of former Michigan play-by-play men Bob Ufer, Frank Beckmann and Jim Brandstatter … well, that hasn’t sunk in quite yet for Karsch, but he’s well-prepared and insisted nobody will work harder at bringing the best possible coverage than him.
“Completely numb to the concept [of being compared to the previous Michigan broadcasters]. It’s really surreal. Hopefully, I’ll make it past one game. I might do the spring game and that might be the end of it,” Karsch joked on The Wolverine Podcast. “It’s overwhelming, and it’s something I’m very much looking forward to.”
Karsch and Jansen will call the Michigan spring game April 2, and will be on air starting Sept. 3 for the opener against Colorado State.

Michigan Wolverines basketball is set to take on Indiana in the Big Ten Tournament Thursday, five years after the program’s plane crash at Willow Run Airport. The day after the incident, Michigan traveled to Washington D.C. just before tip-off, and beat Illinois in their practice jerseys. They went on to win four games in four days, becoming the first team to ever do so en route to the Big Ten Tournament title, and became the lowest seed to win the event’s championship.
Michigan assistant coach Saddi Washington tweeted out a photo that he has on the window sill in his office to remind him of the significant event.
Quote Of The Day
“He’s Shoelace. That’s dope. He’s a legend. What he was doing out there running around and making people miss was crazy. He was a coach in NFL, and the knowledge he’s bringing back is going to help out the players. That’s a humungous piece.”
