Wolverine TV podcast: OL starters set, backup QB far from it

The Michigan Wolverines have one last non-conference tuneup on Saturday against Bowling Green, but there are a few spots on the roster that are up for grabs. Apparently, the offensive line is not one of them.

Offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Sherrone Moore and head coach Jim Harbaugh both spoke to the media on Monday and revealed that the group of Karsen Barnhart, Zak Zinter, Drake Nugent, and Myles Hinton will be the starters up front moving forward.

Sherrone Moore on the offensive line:

“There always is [wiggle room]. It depends on how you perform. Whenever I take over the line that first day in camp, I tell them, ‘I don’t care who starts, because I love you all the same.’ The five guys that practice the best and play the best will be the starters. I’m going to put out the five best guys that are going to help the University of Michigan football team win. And that’s who it is. It’s not an emotional decision. It’s based on film. Whoever those people are, that’s who I want it to be.

“Those five guys have shown to be the best five, so we’re just going to continue to work and see who the best five is this week and the next weeks and the next weeks.”

Howevever, the backup quarterback job is still up for grabs with Davis Warren, Jack Tuttle, Jayden Denegal and Alex Orji still competing for the role. Harbaugh said on Monday that Denegal and Orji would be the focus this weekend.

Jim Harbaugh on the quarterback situation:

“[Tuttle] tells me he’s going to be back this week practicing. I think we’re gonna dodge a bullet there. Probably don’t anticipate him playing, we really need to see Jayden Denegal and Alex Orji in this week. Jack’s acquitted himself well, he practiced well. Had a nice play in the game, it was unfortunate that he got hurt. He’s a tough guy, he’ll be back, but we really need to find out what we have in Jayden and Alex.”

The Wolverine’s Anthony Broome, Chris Balas and Clayton Sayfie discussed Michigan’s Monday press conferences and position battles on their Monday night show, as well as what we’ve learned through two games and taking your questions.
