Michigan football remains No. 2 in AP poll after Rutgers win

Michigan Wolverines football was ranked No. 2 in the Associated Press poll entering the 2023 season, and it still remains in that spot after improving to 4-0 with a 31-7 win over Rutgers Saturday in Ann Arbor. The Maize and Blue trail No. 1 Georgia, the back-to-back defending national champions, and slot ahead of No. 3 Texas, No. 4 Ohio State and No. 5 Florida State.
Over the weekend, Georgia disposed of UAB, 49-21, Texas demolished Baylor, 38-6, Ohio State pulled off the last-second road victory over Notre Dame, 17-14, and Florida State came back, forced overtime and took down Clemson, 31-24, on the road. The Buckeyes propelled from No. 6 to No. 4, and the Seminoles dropped from No. 4 to No. 5.
Between Michigan, Ohio State and No. 6 Penn State, the Big Ten has three of the nation’s top six teams. No. 7 Washington, No. 8 USC, No. 9 Oregon and No. 10 Utah round out the top 10. Notre Dame fell from No. 9 to 11 after losing to the Buckeyes.
Michigan received one first-place vote, while Georgia collected 55. Texas (2), Ohio State (1), Florida State (3) and Washington (1) all earned first-place nods.

Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State are the only Big Ten teams in the top 25. Iowa was No. 24 last week but got blown out by the Nittany Lions, 31-0, Saturday evening in front of a white out crowd. Maryland is undefeated at 4-0 and just blew out Michigan State, 31-9, in East Lansing. The Terrapins received 20 votes. Wisconsin, coming off a 38-17 win at Purdue Friday night, got six votes. The Badgers have one loss, which came at Washington State.
Michigan is set to take on Penn State Nov. 11 in State College and Ohio State in Ann Arbor Nov. 25. Those are the only two ranked opponents currently on the Wolverines’ schedule.
Michigan played its first four games at home, beating East Carolina (30-3), UNLV (35-7) and Bowling Green (31-6) before taking care of business in the Big Ten opener against Rutgers.
