The Michigan Wolverines will never hold their breath waiting for praise or credit from former Ohio State head coach and Fox Sports pundit Urban Meyer. After predicting last season that both Penn State and Ohio State would shut down the Wolverines, he came back with his first bold prediction of the 2023 season and a criticism of the schedule, to boot.

“The Wolverines have played a schedule that is not very good,” Meyer said on Big Noon Kickoff. “You play bad schedules — I’ve been there before. You just don’t get better. If you’re the same team you were in September that you are in October, you’re not a very good team. I believe in Matt Rhule. I believe in Nebraska.

“We saw, they should have beat Minnesota. If you don’t turn the ball over [at Colorado] a couple weeks ago, they’re right in that game. Don’t turn the ball over, let that 3-3-5 defense play, they’ve got good players on defense. I think it’s going to be a close game in Lincoln.”

The problem is that none of those things happened. Michigan played its most complete game of the season in a 45-7 drubbing of Nebraska in Lincoln. The Wolverines went right down the field on the opening drive and punched the ball in for six points and forced a critical turnover two plays into the game on defense via a tipped ball interception.

Before Meyer had likely even flipped over to the Michigan game, it was 14-0. And the Wolverines never looked back.

We will have to wait and see what is said about the Wolverines next week when heading to Minnesota. Kickoff for that game is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on NBC.

Michigan quote of the day

“Pretty high. Pretty darn high. The guys did a tremendous job, just so focused on their football, it was important. It was an important task — critical — we come in here on the road and play good football. I thought our guys did that and then some, in all phases.

“Can’t start a game better than we did today, with taking the opening drive. Tremendous playmaker Roman Wilson and J.J. — what a catch that was. The guys up in the press box were telling me just how good it was when they were watching it on the replay. Keeping his feet in bounds — amazing.”
