Michigan HC Sherrone Moore praises synergy with Chip Lindsey, coordinator relationships

ANN ARBOR – Michigan Wolverines head coach Sherrone Moore made a change at offensive coordnator to start the 2025 offseason, tasking Chip Lindsey with leading an overhaul of that side of the ball. The idea is to not only overhaul the passing game, but help achieve balance with a few new wrinkles thrown in.
Moore still has some meat-and-potatoes aspects of the Michigan offense he wants to retain, but Lindsey’s fresh take and personality has been a breath of fresh air for the Wolverines.

“I think Chip’s just done a really good job of meshing the things that I’ve wanted and that our staff has wanted and then what he’s brought in,” Moore said on Tuesday morning at Schembechler Hall. “Putting this product on the field that’s going to showcase our players’ talents the best. He’s done a really good job. Managing the staff, allowing them to have ideas and put those ideas into the game plan. Just excited where the offense is heading from a holistic standpoint.”
Lindsey brings well over a decade of coaching experience to Michigan, including a head coach stint at Troy from 2019-21. His charisma and organized approach has allowed Moore to assume more of a CEO-type of role leading the football program.
“He’s hilarious. His country twang is phenomenal,” Moore said. “Outstanding football coach and human being. Work ethic, determination, experience as head coach and coordinator… it allows me to let him handle the offense, players, and coaches, while still having my input. He’s receptive to my feedback. Great play caller.
“I run live situations where I just let him call plays and we play football. Watching his style, rhythm, and play-calling process has been really cool. I’ve learned from him too. It’s been fun to have him around.”

Lindsey’s voice on offense is one thing, but the relationships that he has built with the Michigan staff, namely defensive coordinator Wink Martindale, has stood out to Moore. The offensive and defensive leaders are now tied at the hip, which the head coach believes has an impact on the team.
“Wink and Chip’s offices are right by each other,” Moore said. “They’re always together, always talking, always bouncing ideas. Offensive guys are in the defensive hallway and defensive guys are in the offensive hallway. Constant movement, constant being together. They do a great job working together. It’s natural, not me forcing it. It’s necessary for a successful football team.
“Players have to see that. If coaches don’t like each other, players won’t either—it’ll divide the culture. We’re blessed to not have that. The players love the coaches, the coaches love the players, the coaches love each other.”
Lindsey and Martindale also have a friendly golf feud, which Moore keeps out of.
“Wink is the better golfer. One of the best on staff,” Moore joked. “My game? Awful. I’m learning, improving, but I don’t have time now.”
