Dusty May To Embrace Nil Landscape & Thoughts On Who Will Fill Out The Rest Of His Coaching Staff

The Michigan Wolverines continue to expand their board in the transfer portal, reportedly making contact with Notre Dame forward Carey Booth. Booth was a freshman this season and would have three years of eligibility remaining.

Booth, who was a four-star prospect and the No. 59 player in the country in the 2023 recruiting class, averaged 6.4 points and 4.3 rebounds per game this season for the Fighting Irish and also has stretch capabilities, shooting 29.7% from three on 3.5 points per game. Michigan’s previous staff under Juwan Howard had recruited him previously.

Booth will consider a return to South Bend while he seeks out his potential opportunities in the transfer portal. He had previously committed to play for head coach Micah Shrewsberry at Penn State before he was hired to take the job at Notre Dame.

“I’m beyond thankful for getting to wear the blue and gold this year,” Booth wrote on his Instagram story. “I’m especially thankful to Coach (Micah) Shrewsberry and his staff for believing in me and bringing me to South Bend.

“With that being said, I’ve decided to enter the transfer portal to keep all of my options open – including a return to Notre Dame.”

Booth is the latest to hear from Michigan as it transforms its roster under new head coach Dusty May. Other players that have heard from Michigan include in-house players George Washington III and Tarris Reed, Wisconsin’s Connor Essegian, Colorado’s J’Vonne Hadley, Vanderbilt’s Jason Rivera-Torres, Yale’s Danny Wolf, Louisville’s Mike James, Georgetown’s Rowan Brumbaugh, Belmont’s Cade Tyson and a growing list of players.

May and his staff, which is still coming together, are going to be throughout in their search for players for the 2024-25 season and beyond.

“Recruiting now in the portal is more like speed dating than traditional recruiting,” May said during his introductory press conference. “And I think it’s very valuable to have a network of people that you trust and they trust you. And hopefully between former players and former coaches, our program’s gonna have thousands of agents working for us. When I say agents, people that are going to say great things about us and want players to play for us.

“We’re going to cast a big net. We’ll narrow it down, we’ll be very patient because we’re not going to take the wrong guys because we have several spots. We’re going to be very thorough but we need to understand that we need to be right, we need to do our research in advance and make sure we make very calculated decisions because there’s a lot of options, and they’re not all great options.”

Michigan currently has four scholarship players with eligibility remaining with Terrance Williams, Nimari Burnett and Jace Howard having fifth years available and Will Tschetter having two more years left.

TheWolverine.com will continue to monitor the portal in the days and weeks to come.
