Michigan makes contact with Tarleton State transfer portal guard Bubu Benjamin

The Michigan Wolverines have expanded their transfer portal board at guard, making contact with Tarleton State sophomore Bubu Benjamin. The interest was first reported by Sam Kayser on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Benjamin, who has two seasons of eligibility remaining, started 31 of 32 games for the Texans this season, averaging 13.9 points per game, 4.6 rebounds, 1.7 assists and shooting 78.9% from the free throw line in 36 minutes per contest. Michigan saw Benjamin in person this season, when he scored 15 points on 5 makes from three-point range on 7 attempts in a 72-49 Wolverine victory.
On3’s Transfer Portal Rankings have Benjamin as the No. 211 player available and 59th-ranked shooting guard in the class. He is a native of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada and was a four-star recruit coming out of high school and No. 104 overall player, per the On3 Industry Ranking.
Michigan continues to recruit players while its season goes on ahead of Friday night’s Sweet Sixteen matchup with Auburn. The NCAA Tournament has featured most top seeds handling business, which may be partially due to the transfer portal.

“I don’t think Cinderella is dead,” head coach Dusty May said Thursday. “I think she’s probably not going to be making visits as frequently as she did before.
“You know, I look at it like this. We lost a few players at FAU early on. One left before we thought he was an All-League player,” May said in Atlanta. “We’re obviously disappointed. Everyone was upset. My response was always, hey, we get paid to coach basketball, to do the best we can. If they decide to leave, then we’ve got to support them. Now, what we have to do a better job of is making sure we keep these guys long enough to be All-Conference. Then, if they leave, then that’s part of it. But we can’t lose them before they’re going to be All-Conference level players.”
Michigan will likely not have as extensive a roster overhaul as it did when May was hired last offseason, but has still been active in the portal in filling needs on the roster. Backcourt depth is an emphasis, and Purdue Fort Wayne’s Jalen Jackson and Delaware’s Izaiah Pasha are working on visits to Ann Arbor, per On3.
