Michigan hockey (25-7-1) finished off its 2021-22 regular-season home slate on Saturday night with a 3-0 win over the Ohio State Buckeyes on Senior Night. The win capped off a weekend sweep against the hated rivals and kept Michigan at the top of the Big Ten standings.

The game was the third career shutout for sophomore goalie Erik Portillo, who made 30 saves on the night. Michigan’s goal scorers on the night were Philippe Lapointe (assisted by Keaton Pehrson), Luke Hughes (assisted by Jack Summers, Mackie Samoskevich) and Mark Estapa (empty netter).

The Wolverines remain at the top of the conference with two regular-season contests left. Those will take place on Feb. 25-26 against Notre Dame in South Bend. Both games are set to be streamed via the Peacock app.

Also notable about the series is the potential return of forwards Matty Beniers, Kent Johnson, Brendan Brisson and defenseman Owen Power, who will be returning from Olympic action. The second-ranked Wolverines are surging and getting their stars back, making them even more dangerous for the stretch run.

Michigan quote of the day

“Well, he told me — one of the things that I think just like coaches is we steal from each other — plays, defensive things. As a player, I recall growing up, I always looked at Kevin McHale and I enjoyed watching his footwork. And I watched Magic (Johnson) and I enjoyed watching Magic’s no-look passes. I also looked at Charles Barkley and when he’d post-up and dominate a man who was undersized. And so like Moussa, he’s had an opportunity to compete against Liddell, Keegan Murray and the list goes on in the Big Ten — very, very talented conference. And he’s smart enough and also selfless to learn from those guys, in part but he could have his game touched on the word patience.

“Patience is something we’ve been talking about in terms of progression, game by game as you get more comfortable with more reps — the game will start to slow down to you, and the game will slow down to him. He’s just so competitive, and that’s why I enjoy Moussa playing against one of the best players in our conference — Keegan, E.J. and guarding those guys. He’s always accepting the challenge, and that guy — I’m happy he’s on our side…”
