Michigan junior defensive back TJ Metcalf said last week that the defense hasn’t faced graduate quarterback Mikey Keene. Sources said that during Michigan’s Saturday scrimmage, Keene was dressed but not going through team drills. Freshman Bryce Underwood was running the first team, but depth behind him may be a concern. Sayfie and Hole discussed that at the start of the show.

“Personally, only slightly,” Hole said of if he has concerns about depth. “It’s pretty clear why they brought in [graduate] Jake Garcia [from ECU] now, right?

“Yeah, it’s not an ideal situation, and they’re talking about [sophomore] Jadyn Davis like he’s really improved. I’ve heard kinda the same thing — this isn’t the same guy that was a true freshman last year.

“I wouldn’t go so far as to say bubble wrap Bryce, but it’s not as optimal a situation as it looked a little while ago.

“Now, [wide receivers coach] Ron Bellamy either told us the truth today or lied straight to our faces and basically said, ‘Oh, Mikey Keene is doing all kinds of stuff.’ OK, right?”

“You’re in a tough spot when you’re an assistant coach and get asked that question,” Sayfie said of today’s Michigan press conference and Keene’s status.

“Yeah, it’s very true,” Hole said. “But we’ll find out tomorrow. I’m sure [Michigan head coach] Sherrone Moore will set the record straight, or it’ll be Fort Schembechler, who knows?

“It might just be, ‘How’s Mikey Keene’s health?’ ‘All of them are healthy. All of them are doing great.’ I can’t wait to write that up.

“I am a little concerned, because he hasn’t really been going. But at the same time, it’s a new system, but he’s got familiarity with [offensive coordinator] Chip Lindsey already. He had a year with him at UCF. He’s been around college football almost as long as [former QB] Jack Tuttle. He’s got another decade to get there, but he’s on his way.

“So, I don’t know that he needs it as much as Bryce. If they feel like he can be healthy — and I don’t know if they feel that or not — then does he really need to get all the reps? I don’t know that’s necessarily the deal.”
